The Paratus Namibian Cycle Classic, set to take place this weekend on 5 and 6 October 2024, is gearing up for another exciting edition. As one of Namibia’s premier outdoor sporting events, the cycle classic is not just about the thrill of competition but also about inclusion and community. The Paratus Namibian Cycle Classic, set to take place this weekend on 5 and 6 October 2024, is gearing up for another exciting edition. As one of Namibia’s premier outdoor sporting events, the cycle classic is not just about the thrill of competition but also about inclusion and community. Among the many participants this year are a group of para cyclists from the Run Along Sports Foundation, who have been making a significant impact on the event over the past three years.

These athletes, including visually impaired cyclists and a wheelchair cyclist, showcase remarkable determination and teamwork. Three visually impaired cyclists—Shikondyeleni Sam, Mateus Kambudu, and Namweda Fillipus—will be competing alongside their pilots, Stevenson Hamukoto, Johanna Haukongo, and Nelulu Enos. These pilots are responsible for navigating and working the gears of the tandem bikes, while the cyclists, referred to as “stokers,” provide the power from behind. Despite the challenges, their coordination, communication and resilience are inspirational.

Gabriel Nghiishililwa, a hand cyclist who lost his legs at a young age, will also be competing for the third year. Known for his love of speed, Gabriel’s enthusiasm and motivation exemplify the spirit of the event.

Naomi Schmidt, from the Run Along Sports Foundation and Challenged Athletes Namibia, coaches and supports the team. The foundation plays a vital role in providing equipment, nutrition, coaching and transportation for the athletes, who also contribute through fundraising efforts.

Andrew Hall, MD of Paratus Namibia, emphasises the importance of inclusivity at the event: “The Paratus Namibian Cycle Classic is a true reflection of the spirit of sport—open to everyone, regardless of ability. The inclusion of athletes with disabilities, like those from the Run Along Sports Foundation, not only makes the event more diverse but also highlights the strength, resilience and determination these competitors bring. It’s an honour to support an event that fosters such a strong sense of community.”

While Paratus Namibia is proud to be one of the main sponsors of the event alongside The Namibian newspaper, it is the athletes and their stories that make the cycle classic truly special. Their participation underscores the broader mission of the event, which combines sport with philanthropy, with proceeds going to various community projects and charitable causes across Namibia.

Event highlights include:

  • Saturday, 5 October: Mountain bike races for beginners, intermediate and advanced cyclists, along with the Kiddies Classic.
  • Sunday, 6 October: Road bike races across 3 distance categories.
